Tim Dewar from the Gevirtz School’s Department of Education will be a member of the faculty panel “Teaching the UCSB Reads Book, Exhalation: Stories by Ted Chiang” on Wednesday, February 16 from 12 noon – 1 pm. Those interested can register for the webinar online.
This moderated discussion about incorporating the UCSB Reads book into a course will feature UCSB faculty across the disciplines who have done such incorporation successfully and will teach how the UCSB Reads program can support one’s instruction. In addition to Tim Dewar panelists include: Brian Donnelly (English), Kathy Foltz (Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology), Behrooz Parhami (Electrical & Computer Engineering), and Kathy Patterson (Writing Program). The event will be moderated by Elina Salminen (Center for Innovative Teaching, Research, and Learning).
The award-winning Exhalation— the 2022 UCSB Reads book—is a collection of nine science fiction short stories written in spare, dramatic prose that addresses essential questions about human life, including free will, fate, bioethics, time travel, virtual reality, cyborgs, and artificial intelligence.
Now in its 16th year, UCSB Reads—sponsored by the UC Santa Barbara Library and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor—brings the campus and Santa Barbara communities together to read a common book that explores compelling issues of our time. From January through May, the Library sponsors talks, panel discussions, film screenings, book clubs, and other events to explore the book’s themes. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate Exhalation into their winter or spring courses.
On May 10, UCSB Reads will culminate with a free, in-person lecture by Ted Chiang in Campbell Hall. This public lecture is presented in partnership with UCSB Arts & Lectures.
Tim Dewar (Education, Ph.D., ’08), Associate Teaching Professor, is the Single Subject Teaching Credential Coordinator for the Teacher Education Program. Dewar is also Director of the South Coast Writing Project (SCWriP) housed in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.
