Former Gaucho athlete Katherine Serdio (TEP MST candidate) cares about the social and emotional development of all students inside and outside the classroom. Katherine spoke to us about how she plans to incorporate the lessons learned on the soccer team into her future classroom.
GGSE: What made you decide on the Gevirtz Graduate School?
Serdio: I went to UCSB for undergrad and played Division 1 soccer. I have only heard amazing things about the program. It wasn't a hard decision to stay in beautiful Santa Barbara!
GGSE: So far, what has been a highlight from your experience in the program or from your fieldwork experience in a classroom?
Serdio: A highlight from my experience is being able to work with Harding University Partnership School! I am from Santa Barbara and feel a close connection with Harding and the students.
GGSE: What issue(s) are you passionate about in education?
Serdio: I am passionate about the social and emotional development of all students. I look forward to creating a fun and safe environment for my students to grow holistically.
GGSE: Is there a particular person and/or experience in your educational background that was meaningful to you/made you want to teach?
Serdio: I always loved my elementary school teachers. I want to be one of those teachers my students talk about 20 years from now. I want to make a positive impact on all of my students' lives!
GGSE: If you could teach a lesson on absolutely anything, what would it be?
Serdio: If I could teach a lesson on anything, I would incorporate soccer somehow. Soccer is a place where I learned about leadership, teamwork, competition, and where I made some of my greatest friends. I want my students to feel like they are a part of something inside and outside of the classroom.
