Heidi Zetzer of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School—along with Juliet Velarde Betita, MFT—will co-present the Psychiatric Grand Rounds at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on November 12, 12 noon to 1:30 pm in the Burtness Auditorium. Their presentation for the healthcare community is entitled “Multicultural Supervision: The Joy of Embracing Each Other’s World Views.”
Supervisors and trainees are called upon to develop and apply multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills in their work with their clients and each other. Professional ethical codes and benchmark competencies provide markers for the development of cultural competence in supervision and practice, but they do not provide the supervisor or the trainee with instructions as to how to reach the benchmarks. The purpose of this presentation is to provide participants with a pathway towards greater cultural competence that includes a description of the core principles that we have found helpful in multicultural supervision. The principles include: a) embracing a diversity philosophy, b) increasing awareness of one’s own multicultural identity and social group membership, c) practicing cultural humility, and d) attending to parallel process.
This presentation will increase participants’ confidence in their ability to enrich their interactions with supervisors, trainees, and colleagues by engaging in meaningful dialogue about culture, psychotherapy, and supervision.
Juliet Velarde Betita is a teacher, trainer and therapist. As a Filipina, female, elder, daughter of immigrants, first born in the USA, her identity is an ever-shifting adjustment to these cultural identities as she moves in the world. She has taught and facilitated trainings at Antioch University, Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara City College, Devereux, Ventura County Human Services Agency and the SAVE Employee Assistance Program.
Dr. Heidi A. Zetzer is the Director of the Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic and a Lecturer with Security of Employment in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at UC Santa Barbara.
