cover of the book The Prize

On Saturday, October 3 at 3 pm, Dale Russakoff, author of The Prize: Who’s in Charge of America’s Schools, will present a free lecture at UC Santa Barbara’s Campbell Hall. Russakoff, a veteran Washington Post reporter, examines the failed attempt to reform Newark, New Jersey schools as a hoped-for model for a nation-wide reform, despite a collaboration between Democratic Mayor Cory Booker, Republican Governor Chris Christie, and a $100 million donation from Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

The presentation will be based on Russakoff’s book of the same name that has been heavily praised for its thoroughness as a cautionary tale on education reform. From mismanagement of money to a lack of involvement from parents and teachers in the reform plan, Russakoff’s behind-the-scenes reporting helps to uncover exactly where it all went wrong—and what could have been done to help.

Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
