Ruqayyah (Rue) Mansour and Jazzmyn Ward of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School have been named the Recipients of the 2021 John Dewey Fellowship. Generously supported by donors including the Cushman Family Foundation, this fellowship recognizes a graduate student for the accomplishment of being the first in their family to attend college and for their commitment to higher education despite personal obstacles.
Ruqayyah (Rue) Mansour is a doctoral student pursuing a Ph.D. in Education at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School. She also works as a development assistant in the Engineering and Sciences Development Office at UCSB.
Jazzmyn Ward is a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology program working with Dr. Erika Felix. Prior to attending UCSB, she double majored in Psychology and Criminology with a minor in African American Studies at UC Irvine. Ward then went on to complete her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at California State University, Northridge where she studied community violence and ethnic racial socialization among marginalized populations. Broadly, Ward is interested in variations of trauma exposure and its effects on mental health among marginalized populations particularly in the Black community. Furthermore, she also has interests in resilience and protective factors in addition to program development and program evaluation.
