Michael Furlong has been appointed Associate Dean of Research of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School.
“As I am eager to find ways to strengthen the school’s efforts to seek and receive external funds that support our research, it became clear to me that we needed someone who has this task as a major part of their portfolio, given there are many facets to this important work,” announced Dean Jeffrey Milem. “It is my pleasure to inform you that Michael Furlong has agreed to serve as Associate Dean. Given the many roles he has played during his long and distinguished career at UCSB, I am extremely happy to have him work on our behalf in this capacity.”
Professor Furlong, recently co-interim dean of the school and also a former Chair of the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology, joined the faculty in 1990. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association, and an elected a member of Society for the Study of School Psychology. He conducts much of his research as part of the international Center for School-Based Youth Development, including a recent $1.3 million grant from the Institute of Education Science for screening to measure emotional health of high school students.
Furlong’s research focuses on school-based approaches to foster positive youth development and the development of valid strength-based measures of child and adolescent well-being. Furlong has served as the Editor of the Journal of School Violence (2008-2015) and he is a co-editor of the Handbook of School Violence and Safety (2006, 2012) and the Handbook of Positive Psychology in Schools (2009, 2014).
