Desirae Maier, a Gevirtz School alumna and incoming doctoral student, has recently joined the Board of Directors for Alpha Resource Center in Santa Barbara. She was sworn into the position at the last virtual board meeting which took place on June 24.
The mission of Alpha Resource Center is to empower individuals with intellectual and similar disabilities to make their mark on the world. Their programs create opportunities, support families, and foster belonging.
Maier graduated from the Gevirtz School’s Teacher Education Program in the spring of 2015 with an Education Specialist Credential. In the summer of 2015 she also obtained her M.Ed.. For the past five years since her graduation she has been a mentor teacher to current special education candidates in the Santa Barbara and Carpinteria unified school districts. This fall, she will pursue her doctorate in the Department of Education at the Gevirtz School, focusing on special education, disabilities and risk studies.
Maier learned about the Alpha Resource Center while providing respite support through the Teacher Education Program. She first joined the leadership team and served on the program services committee. She then was invited to join the Board of Directors.
