Ann Lippincott of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School will give the presentation “Mental Health Matters” as part of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s Psychiatric Grand Rounds Series on Wednesday, June 14 from 12 noon – 1:30 pm in the Burtness Auditorium. Mental Health Matters (MHM) is an innovative curricular unit, developed by a group led by Lippincott, specifically designed for students who are approaching adolescence whereby they learn basic facts about mental health issues. MHM is a means to address the issues that California Education Standards for Health include mental, emotional and social health, yet these topics are absent from most elementary, middle and high school curricula and textbooks.
At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: cite local adolescent mental health statistics (CA Healthy Schools Survey data); explain how and why stigma negatively affects mental health and wellness; discuss how education can move the “stigma-busting” agenda forward; analyze protocols for responding to students in crisis (at UC Santa Barbara and in the Santa Barbara Unified School District); and, identify mental wellness strategies.
Ann Lippincott received her Ph.D. in Education from UCSB in 1999. After having been on the faculty of the Teacher Education Program in the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education for 35 years, serving also as Associate Director, she now has emeritus status and continues on in a teaching capacity. She is on the Board of Directors for the Mental Wellness Center and heads up the Education Committee responsible for the development of the Mental Health Matters curriculum.
