Ann Carlyle, a continuing lecturer at the Gevirtz School of Education’s Teacher Education Program, was an expert reviewer for two series of Early Learning Seminars for well-known publisher Houghton Mifflin. The two seminars—Building Language and Knowledge and Developing Math Concepts—were developed using Carlyle’s expertise in classroom math teaching and current research breakthroughs. As part of the Early Learning Series for PreK-K, the seminars help teachers build knowledge for success in school and their communities.
Carlyle formerly was an elementary school teacher in the Goleta Union School District for more than 39 years where she was a mentor teacher. She is a 1993 winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and the 2000 recipient of the George Polya Memorial Award from the California Mathematics Council. Ann served on the National Council Teachers of Mathematics Board of Directors from 1997- 2000. She has chaired the Editorial Panel for Teaching Children Mathematics. She was a member of the California State Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission from 1989-1993 and was chair of the Mathematics Subject Matter Committee. She is the author of two books published by Math Solutions/Scholastic: Teaching Preschool and Kindergarten Math (2012) and It Makes Sense! Using the Number Line to Build Number Sense (2014).
