Russell Rumberger, a UC Santa Barbara Gevirtz School emeritus professor, will participate in the National Summit on Developing a STEM Workforce Strategy in Washington, D.C. The summit, hosted by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, will examine the best training and education methods that lead to STEM success and a successful workforce. Topics covered include encouraging college-business relationships, interdisciplinary and hands on learning, the use of STEM in non-STEM careers, and more. Rumberger, who was also part of the planning committee, will moderate a panel titled, “Focusing on K-12 STEM Education and Workforce Readiness: How Do We Lay the Groundwork Early for Success in STEM Careers?”
Rumberger, who retired to emeritus status in 2015, had been a Professor in the Department of Education at the Gevirtz School since 1987, where his research and publications have focused on dropouts, linguistics, and education policy. He has published several books, including Dropping Out: Why Students Drop Out of High School and What Can be Done About It (2011, Harvard University Press).
