Kenneth Sterling – who just earned his Ph.D. in the research area of leadership and policy from the Department of Education at UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School – received the 2015 Michael D. Young Engaged Scholars Award. Associate Dean of Students Dr. Don Lubach not only was one of the nominators for Sterling’s award, but he also presented it to him at the University Awards Ceremony on June 12 that was hosted by Chancellor Henry Yang and attended by Dr. Michael Young, the recently retired Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Just in its inaugural year, the Michael D. Young Engaged Scholar Award is presented to a student who has shown exemplary dedication to the university through application of his or her studies. Dr. Lubach’s speech recognized Sterling for his leadership at UCSB, where he devoted himself to helping others and improving learning experiences for all UC students. “While working to enhance the role of technology in the learning environment, Ken demonstrated incredible curiosity and initiative in his efforts to make knowledge readily available to more students through online and hybrid courses,” Lubach said. “Ken’s extensive research focused on learning technology policy, online learning, STEM programs, and college completion. His identification, design, and development of new instructional strategies resulted in the creation of several online versions of courses.”
Dr. Lubach further recognized Sterling for his service to the UC Campus and UC system, including his involvement with the UC Office of the President on the Innovative Learning Technology Initiative, the Higher Education Research Group, the Higher Education Research Consortium, and for his service on the Faculty Executive Committee and the Academic Senate Committee on Courses and General Education.
