Dr. Jane Carlisle, alumna of UC Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz School, has recently retired after contributing over 30 years of service to UCSB students, faculty, and staff at UCSB’s Counseling & Psychological Services center. Over the years, Carlisle directed the center’s consultation services, served as associate director of counseling services, and supervised and trained pre-doctoral interns and doctoral practicum students.
“Dr. Carlisle is one of the most beloved psychologists to work at Counseling & Psychological Services,” says Dr. Heidi Zetzer, Director of the Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic housed in the Gevirtz School. “She helped an incredible number of UCSB students cope with the challenges of undergraduate life and saved lives by providing her clients with a safe trusting therapeutic relationship and the skills they needed to regain emotional balance in times of stress. Dr. Carlisle inspired clients, colleagues, coworkers, and community members to see the strengths within themselves and other people. I am honored to congratulate Dr. Carlisle on her retirement and delighted to know that she will continue to provide psychotherapy to help-seekers in her private practice.”
Dr. Jane Carlisle completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1992 at the Gevirtz School and is a licensed psychologist in California. She completed her internship at County Mental Health in Santa Barbara. She led groups in Assertiveness Training and Coping With Life. As a generalist in individual and group therapy, she worked with anxiety, depression, past abuse, self-esteem, relationships, and general coping issues. She believes that knowledge gathering about the self which takes place in therapy is an evolving process that cannot be separated form context (e.g. family, culture, values, belief systems, etc.), and that this knowledge gathering is an interactive process, dependent upon a trustworthy, and genuine therapeutic relationship, respecting the client as the authority in determining the meaning of that work.
